In April 2022, an exciting opportunity presented itself when a new client, the proud owner of a sprawling botanical garden, approached us with a unique request for a classic mythological pan sculpture. While our extensive collection already included several stunning “Pan” sculptures, none quite matched the vision our client had in mind.
This is where Katherine McAdoo, our talented Assistant Director of Operations and a true connoisseur of Greek Mythology, eagerly stepped in. With her wealth of knowledge and passion for the subject, Katherine saw this as the perfect chance to delve deeper into the world of Pan and bring our client’s vision to life.
In ancient Greek religion and mythology, Pan held a prominent place as the god of the wild, shepherds, and flocks. He was also associated with rustic music and impromptus, often acting as a companion to the nymphs. Depicted with the hindquarters, legs, and horns of a goat, much like a faun or satyr, Pan embodied the untamed essence of nature. Hailing from the rustic realm of Arcadia, he further symbolized the god of fields, groves, and wooded glens. Additionally, Pan’s association with sex connected him to concepts of fertility and the rejuvenation of springtime.
