Care & Cleaning Guide for Bronze Statuary & Fountains

Bronze sculptures are commonly finished with French Brown or Verdi Green patinas. Proper care will help preserve their beauty and protect them from natural weathering.

Natural Weathering

Bronze is an alloy primarily made of copper, with small amounts of tin, zinc, and sometimes lead. Over time, exposure to air and moisture causes oxidation:

  • French Brown finishes may gradually develop a green patina if left outdoors.

  • Verdi Green finishes retain their color over time.

This natural patina process is normal, but if you prefer to preserve the original finish, regular maintenance is recommended.

Care for Statuary Finishes

  • French Brown: Use a brown wax.

  • Verdi Green: Use a clear wax.

Applying Wax

Waxing protects bronze from dirt, moisture, and oxidation while enhancing its appearance:

  1. Use a paintbrush to apply a thin layer of wax over the entire sculpture.

  2. Apply extra wax in areas with intricate details.

  3. Let the wax sit for a few minutes.

  4. Buff and polish with a soft cloth or an electric buffer.

  5. If oxidation or dirt remains, repeat as needed.

Frequency: Apply wax several times per year for best results, more often in humid, coastal, or extreme temperature climates.

Fountains

  • In freezing climates, winterize your fountain: drain all water from pipes and basins, ensure the fountain is completely dry, and cover or wrap it before freezing temperatures arrive.
