The David Sculpture, inspired of course by the exceptional work by Michelangelo from 1501 – 1504 at the young age of 26. The original marble sculpture of David which is 17 feet tall and over 12,000 pounds is sculpted from a single piece of marble that had been previously portioned from other sculptors and left outside, one of which being the famous Donatello. While our sculpture isn’t nearly as heavy and not quite as tall, the original David can now be found at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, Italy. Portrayed after his victory over Goliath, yet striking a simple pose, he has an air of youth and strength and has become one of the most recognized works of Renaissance sculpture.
Metropolitan Galleries offers two versions of the David Sculpture. One is developed from the ancient and traditional method of lost wax bronze casting, while the other is carved from a very high quality block of white marble.
